Introduction
Full dentures can be completely removed by the patient. They substitutes all the teeth in a toothless jaw.
If the upper jaw-bone is in good condition, it affords a very good support for the upper denture.
The lower denture can be more difficult to position due to its “horse-shoe” shape, necessary to allow room for the tongue.
Dentures are made of acrylic resin.
Side effects
Full dentures can provoke some side-effects which disappear rapidly:
- Excessive saliva production. (usually disappears after a couple of hours )
- Difficulties in speaking. ( “German people speak better English – English people speak better French. Feels like you have a “piano in your mouth “ ). After a short time one becomes accustomed to the new feeling and can speak normally
- Pain. Until the gums have become accustomed to pressure from the new dentures, some slight pain is normal
- Small sores may develop caused by friction between denture and gum. In this case the denture must be professionally controlled and altered
Precautionary measures:
- Never step on the prosthesis nor let it drop to the ground! Upon removal, dentures must be stored in a safe place!
- If the denture fits too loosely in the mouth see us immediately!
- An annual control of dentures is mandatory
- Dentures should be removed at night in order to give the mucous membrane of the mouth a rest
- Hygiene: after every meal and before going to bed, one should remove the denture and clean it thoroughly in order to maintain minimal bacterial activity!
