Clasp-held dentures
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
- With time harmful to teeth because of pushing and pulling of the clasps
- Metal clasps partially visible
Overdenture ("telescoping")
Clasp– free denture which fits over a small number of existing teeth or implants. These are held in place by a telescoping mechanism.
Advantages:
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Less stress on abutment teeth
- Abutment teeth are stabilized
- Easy to clean
- Comfort in mastication and use graceful palatal arch
Disadvantages:
- Part of palate is covered with arch
- Covering material is resin
- Several sessions necessary
- More substance of abutment teeth must be taken away to make room for double crowns
- Caries possible at seat of crown
Dentures on implants
An important alternative to bridges or dentures is the surgical implant where an anchor is fused to the bone of the jaw serving as a stable base to which a prosthesis may be attached. After setting the implants the denture is fixed by a bar that is screwed to the implants.
