Fixed Reconstructions - Crowns |
Severely deteriorated teeth that can no longer be filled mustbe covered with a crown. Teeth which have undergone root -canal treatment require an additional post, which is implanted in the root to stabilize the crown.(->facing¹).
¹Facing: On a metal frame ceramic mass/resin is attached with individual colour due to neighbouring teeth.
Resin Crown
Should only be used as a temporary covering for the tooth.
Advantages:
- Rapid manufacture - ideal for temporary use
- Low cost
Disadvantages:
- Poor aesthetics
- Short duration
- Poor sealing, caries may occur along edges of crown
- Useful only as a provisional cover
Resin – faced crowns ( metal frame )
Advantages:
- Less expensive than other crowns
Disadvantages:
- Rapid discolouration
- Metal frame visible after short time (rapid abrasion)
- Limited duration
Ceramic crowns on metal frames
Especially in the visible areas of the teeth, these crowns afford an aesthetically convincing alternative.
Advantages:
- Satisfying aesthetically
- Durable
Disadvantages:
- Sensitivity to hot and cold possible
- Approximately 50% of tooth substance must be sacrificed
- Complex manufacture
Logan crown
The most aesthetically perfect solution is the pure ceramic Logan crown which has no disturbing metal frame.
Advantages:
- Perfect aesthetics - cannot be detected from natural teeth
Disadvantages:
- Danger of fractures through bruxism or if crown is too high
- Manufacture and preparation of teeth more extensive
