Preventative Tooth Care - Treatment of tooth diseases |
Plaque
Our mouth is a permanent home to bacteria whose proliferation is aggravated by the consumption of sugars. They adhere to the unclean surfaces of teeth, forming thicker or thinner layers . If not removed in time, these layers convert to plaque. Without prophylactic treatment, the minerals in the saliva augment the plaque and we are left with dental tartar.
This can only be removed with special devices by dental hygienists.
Caries
The metabolism of bacteria permanently depleats minerals from the enamel matrix. The enamel and the underlying dentine is dissolved and destroyed. Sensitivity to hot and cold, sweet and sour increases. Eventually cavities occur.
Caries can be detected on the tooth surface before discolouration indicates the advent of a cavity. Without intervention the tooth starts to rot, necessitating root canal treatment and eventually, extraction.
