In the 1990’s, Dr. Eduardo Anitua¹ began research on the post operative improvement of bone structure in answer to a need for a biological filler for porous bone. This product is usually derived from plasma from the patients own blood, which among other elements
contains certain proteins contributing to cellular growth.
The PRGF System, (plasma rich in growth factors) designed and patented by Dr. Anitua, allows a large concentration of growth factors to be extracted from the plasma.

What is PRGF?
A revolutionary technique for the regeneration of bone and cell structure discovered and developed by BTI Biotechnology Institute in Vitoria, Spain in the last 7 years.
This system works with various blood factors consisting of protein complexes which, when applied to surgical wounds, stimulate the synthesis of the bone and the restoration of the soft tissue.
What are growth factors and where are they to be found ?
A great deal of growth factors are to be found in the blood, particularly in the blood cells themselves, and are called “alpha granules”. They play an important role in the regeneration and restoration of the bone cell structure and form an integral part of dental surgery.
Advantages of PRGF
- PGRF is derived from small quantities of the patients own blood (5-40 cm3)
- PGRF is a concentrated complex of growth factors with a portion of anti-inflammatory factors
- There is no risk of cross infection or of contracting illness from 3rd parties
- There is no danger of allergic reaction to one’s own blood
- No need to rely upon bovine thrombine or its derivatives
- This technique is used in extractions, periodontal treatment, implantation and sinus lifting
How is PRGF obtained?
PRGF is obtained through a centrifugal processing of the blood right in our own laboratory.
The process takes 15 – 20 minutes. (See illustration)
It is prepared a few minutes prior to the surgical intervention.
